In a chaotic economy and job market, perspective, flexibility and attitude is everything.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the UK. Since the 1980s, big employers such as in ship building, steel and coal-mining have given way to ever increasing numbers of SME’s involved in media, information and communications technology and tourism. Today, according to the Federation of Small Businesses, there are 4.7
million small businesses in Britain, employing 13.5 million people (58% of the private sector workforce) and contributing more than half of the UK turnover. Small businesses are concerned about the current economic environment in which they find themselves.

And while unemployment increases at a the fastest rate on record employees feel they have a right to be concerned. But as an employee what can you do to manage your career against a back drop of chaos and uncertainty?

There is little point in denying that reality is biting for the majority.
Research shows that most employees across sectors and businesses big and small,
have felt negative impacts for themselves and their employer as a result of the
current economic slowdown.

So, is a new perspective on Career Management called for? And what would that
look like?

There is a statistic from June '09 issue of Parade Magazine that states by 2019 over 40% of the work force is going to be independent contractors.

This means that 40% of the population will be their own business identity.

This is a major paradigm shift for how the majority of people earn their wages.
